I was nominated as Student Director for the annual Apparel Senior Showcase at the beginning of Spring 2018. Senior Apparel Design and Merchandising students present their final collection at this event. Each collection consists of 3 garments that follow a cohesive theme or idea. Students only have one semester to develop their collections from concept to the final collection. In my role as the student director, I coordinated eight committees for an event of over 500+ participants.
I began by organizing the committees through google drive to ensure communication and transparency. I organized a master timeline of tasks and gave weekly updates. I provided guidance and support to each committee and provided them with a framework for their tasks. There were certainly times when we came to roadblocks but we all worked collaboratively to find appropriate solutions.
I also managed backstage, organized the models, and delegated tasks to the appropriate personnel. The day of the event, I co-hosted with the leading professor and managed the flow of over 100 models. The day of the event was probably one of the most challenging things I have done in my professional career. However, it was also rewarding to hear from other students and faculty that this was one of the best showcases they have had in a while. This experience was insightful because I learned how to work in a stressful and fast environment.
